This blog is for my granddaughter and all of her generation who deserve a better present than they have and a far better future than we are leaving them. It is also a hope for a humane and sustainable (if diminished) world, one in which reality is finally faced—with bravery, sharing, and awareness rather than cowardice, greed, and denial. And it is a call to readers to pursue that humane, sustainable world with broader perspective, positive empathy, and motivated cooperation.
The time to act is already past yet still remains. We older humans cannot wait for grandchildren to mature into action. We must do the work of clearing the ground for them of the nonsense, self-absorption, self-service, and ignorance that have gotten us to this point. On that cleared ground we must lay the foundation and create the necessary structures for the best world still to achieve. Most of all, the kids of the climate change future must be fully informed, supported, and empowered to understand today and to take tomorrow from there. It will be their world, for better or worse.
This blog endorses the “better,” creating those structures and laying that foundation for my granddaughter and all the young people facing unprecedented current and future challenges. They are asking, or will be, “why did you let this happen? Why did you accept doing little to nothing to stop or limit it? Why were you quiet for so long?” This blog and your/their use of it are one way to answer “we didn’t and we weren’t.”
